A scarce early nineteenth century edition of Greek philosopher Plutarch's 'Parallel Lives', here abridged and significantly revised for use in schools by Scottish educator and priest William Mavor.

First published in 1800 and scarce in all early editions, Mavor includes seventeen of Plutarch' forty-eight biographies of famous men. Written at the beginning of the second century AD, Plutarch's concern was not historical detail but rather with exploring the influence of character, good or bad, on the lives and destinies of famous men.

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece.

With the contemporary inscription of Max Cummings, 1806, to the title page, and the blind stamp of a bank agent to the title page also.
