A collection of the correspondence of eighteenth-century British journalist John Wilkes (1725-1797). Wilkes was considered a radical, and he was instrumental in persuading the British government to concede to the printers' rights to publish verbatim accounts of parliamentary debates, and he also introduced the first bill for reform of British parliament in 1776. 

Complete in five volumes. 

The first edition of this work.

Edited and compiled by John Almon.

Including an engraved frontispiece to Volume I, a facsimile letter penned by Wilkes to Volume III, a folding plate of a facsimile letter penned by Wilkes to Volume IV, and a folding plate of a facsimile letter penned by Wilkes to Volume V. 

Collated and complete. 

Including two pages of advertisements to the rear of Volume V. 

Containing a small sticker from a previous bookseller to the front pastedown of Volume I, and a 'Goldsmith Building' stamp to one of the front free-endpapers in each volume.

Condition

In contemporary half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with some light shelf wear and rubbing to the spines, joints, and extremities. Front joints are lightly strained to Volumes I, II, and IV. A small sticker from a previous bookseller to the front pastedown of Volume I and a 'Goldsmith Building' stamp to one of the front free-endpapers in each volume. Internally, front hinge to Volume II is lightly strained, remaining binding is firm. Pages contain the odd instance of light spotting, otherwise pages are bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work.
