'The Adventures of Roderick Random' was partly based on Smollett's experience in the British Navy. The protagonist, Roderick, travels around to France, South America, Bath, and the West Indies, the text being imbued with Smollett's own travel notes, with rich and vivid descriptions of the places Random travels to.

With illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson, a popular Georgian caricaturist.
