What Our Customers Say...

Description

An Important Work, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding

An important set of Hollar plates of the Hans Holbein series 'The Dance of Death'. In the original binding which could do with some repair but crucially the all important plates are unusually clean and bright. With the adverts at the rear, also unusual. The series shows scenes where Death intruded into the everyday lives of thirty-four people, all from various levels of society. Illustrated with a frontispiece, one folding plate, and thirty one plates. Holbein was a noted German painter who worked during the Northern Renaissance, and is one of the greatest portraitists of the sixteenth century, painting portraits of Henry VIII and his wives. Two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. Prior owner's ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, the boards may detach. Rubbing to the boards and spine. Loss of most of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-tond with some spots.
