What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

The first edition of this work. A scarce work. This work is a collection of places showing the places that the poet William Cowper would have frequented. Including his summer house, Weston House, a rustic bridge, the elms, and more. William Cowper was a popular English poet who helped initiate the Romantic movement, with his descriptions of life in the English countryside. After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign. Illustrated with twelve plates. Illustrated by James Storer and John Greig. Storer was an engraver who devoted himself to producing views of topography and ancient architecture. He collaborated with Greig, who was another topographical artist, for some years, publishing 'Views in North Britain illustrative of the Works of Burns', 'Select Views of London and its Environs', and 'The Antiquarian and Topographical Cabinet'.
