What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Signed

Volume I and II only, forming the text volumes of this work. Lacking the third atlas volume as is common with this title. A very scarce work by Sonnini, one of two travel works he wrote. The other work, 'Travels to Upper and Lower Egypt' is more commonly seen. To this work Sonnini analyses the climate, soil, natural history, resources, manner and customs of the locations he visits. With half-titles to both works. 'Avis Au Relieur' and advertisements to volume I. Two pages of advertisements to volume II, with a printed signature of the printer to the 'Decret Concernant les Contrefacteurs' to volume II proving this work to be legitimate. Letter from the author tipped in preceding the half-title to volume I. The letter is dated 20 Brumaire, an 11 (11 November 1802) and is addressed to one 'Madame Veuve Andre' of the Rue de la Poissonnerie in Nancy. He discusses a recent unfortunate event in her life and promises a future meeting in Nancy during the Summer. This letter is personal in nature and Sonnini offers her guidance as 'la personne qui vous est le plus attaché et le plus sincèrement dévoué'. Sonnini was a French naturalist best known for his 127 volume work 'Histoire Naturelle'. A smartly bound scarce account of Sonnini's travels in Greece and Turkey.
