The fourth edition of this work, originally published as 'A Botanical Arrangement of all the Vegetables Naturally Growing in Great Britain'.

Complete in four volumes.

Volume II illustrated with ten plates.

Volume III illustrated with two plates.

Volume IV illustrated with one hand coloured plate, and two plates.

Collated, complete.

Half-title present to each volume.

One page of adverts to the rear of Volume IV.

William Withering's thorough and influential early British Flora, the first in English based on the new Linnaean taxonomy. An extensive study into the common and uncommon vegetables grown in Britain.

Including a description of each plant's usage as good, medicine, or poisons, and their various applications in economy or the arts.

At the time of publication, though the work was popular, Withering was criticised by some for having made a bowdlerised version of Linnaeus, omitting references to sexual reproductions in order to protect modesty. Withering intended this so that the work could be used without any issues by a wider audience, mostly women, without having to worry about exposing them to any explicit detail.

Illustrated by the author's wife, Helena Withering.
