New edition of The Works of Samuel Johnson in uniform quarter calf bindings and marbled boards.
A new edition in twelve volumes, with an essay on his life and genius by Arthur Murphy. Volumes XIII and XIV were added later to the set.
Volumes I-IX are on Poets, Volume XII contains their Lives and an Index, and Volumes XIII and IV are of Debates in Parliament.
This collection was published in varying dates as follows:
Volume I (1806), Volume II (1806), Volume III (1806), Volume IV (1810), Volume V (1810), Volume Vi (1806), Volume VII (1806), Volume VIII (1806), Volume IX (1806), Volume X (1801), Volume XI (1801), Volume XII (1810), Volume XIII (1811) and Volume XIV (1811).
Condition
In quarter calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, very smart. There is some bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. The hinges are strained and there is some slight wear to the leather of the spines in this area. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some light spotting and age toning.
