First edition, in a attractive leather binding. By Johann Caspar Lavater, a Swiss poet and physiognomist. With engraved frontispiece. Essays include 'On Grace and Beauty', 'On Man' and 'On Worms'. With a dedication to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire - made a popular tragic figure by Amanda Foreman's biography and Keira Knightley's subsequent film portrayal - to both title page and dedication page.
Condition
In a full roan binding. Externally, rather smart, though slightly dulled by past leather creaming. Very light wear to extremities only. Endpapers professionally replaced. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with spotting to first and last few pages, and the odd handling marks throughout.
