What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

Illustrated throughout both volumes, with 11 plates to the first volume and 10 to volume II. Collated, volume II is lacking the frontispiece and 'nightmare' plate.

'The Botanic Garden' comprises two long poems: 'The Economy of Vegetation' and 'The Loves of the Plants'.  The first poem is a celebration of technological innovation and scientific discovery. It also provides theories on contemporary scientific questions such as the history of the cosmos.  The second poem 'The Loves of Plants' has garnered more attention over the last few hundred years and is a promotion of Linnaeus's classification scheme for plants.

Condition

In uniform tree calf bindings. Externally with loss to the boards of both volumes. Joints have split. Front hinges to both volumes are tender. The front hinge to volume I is particularly weak and may detach unless carefully handled. The frontispiece to volume I is loosening. Evidence of bookplate removal to both volumes. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright. Tidemarks to plate edges
