A first edition two volume set of this work, rebound in a half calf binding for the Library Office of Woods, with the binder's label to the rear paste downs. Library stamps to the front paste downs and front free end papers. Folding map of the eastern districts, tipped in to Volume I. Folding map of the western districts, tipped in to Volume II. William Marshall (1845-1818) published six studies on the farming practices of different regions of England from 1788 to 1798, which remain important historical resources on English agriculture. This is the final instalment on the South of England. These volumes include information on the cultivation of crops; management of woodlands, orchards and estates; hiring staff; animal husbandry; implements and buildings; and selling at markets. Volume I surveys Maidstone, Kent, Romney Marsh, and Canterbury, with particular focus on the growing of hops in Maidstone. Volume II surveys the Isle of Thanet, Isle of Wight, Sussex, Petworth, valley of Farnham, Surrey heathland, Sussex coast, and the Chalk Hills. 2 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume I.

Condition

Rebound in a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with small faint marks to the boards, and a little bumping to the extremities and spine of Vol II. Tear to the cloth, which is lifting, to the rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean apart from the odd spot. Folding maps in excellent condition.
