What Our Customers Say...
Description
Leather Binding, Rebound
A leather bound copy of Pierre Pomme's eighteenth century treatise in which he presents a new approach to 'the vapours', a frequently diagnosed malady including headaches, crying, convulsions, and fainting. Published in French. In the treatise, Pomme argues that the convulsions and paralysis are caused by a hardening of the fibres related to the dryness of the body. Pomme recommends cold baths, moderate bleedings, and drinking litres of chicken, veal, and frog broth. Rather than draw on the findings of other doctors, Pomme supports his arguments by listing his famous patients. The treatise was very successful, and was translated into several languages. The binding is signed by the binders to the front pastedown of each volume. The volumes were bound by May.
Condition
Rebound in a quarter calf binding over cloth covered boards. Externally, lovely, with just a small mark to the spine of the second volume. Internally, firmly bound. Lightly foxed to the front and rear of both volumes.
