Description

First Edition, Original Binding

The first edition thus of this work, being the first edition of this English translation. Originally printed in French at Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1775. A very interesting work looking at the state of Portugal in 1766, as it appeared to the author whilst he was travelling through the country. Dumouriez was ordered to tour the country by the Duke de Choiseul, the Minister of Foreign Affairs under Louis XV. It was to Choiseul that Dumouriez reported his observations in Portugal, being both complementary and negative at times. The work includes a geographical description of Portugal, a description of the Portuguese colonies, information on their Army, the national character, and government. Joseph I was King of Portugal in 1766, and he was commonly known as 'The Reformer'. He was also known for his devotion to hunting and opera, and for having one of the greatest collections of operatic scores in Europe. Written by Charles Francois Dumouriez, who was a French general during the French Revolutionary Wars. He was a royalist intriguer during Napoleon's reign, and acted as an advisor to the British government. His name is one of those inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe. No translator is attributed in this work. With a half-title, though bound without the final blank leaf that is called for by the ESTC under the citation number T80475.
