Bound in half-calf on marbled boards.
Illustrations include a frontispiece engraving by J. Holloway to the front of Vol I.
This is the first two volumes of 'The Works of Tobias Smollett, M. D.', which was published in eight volumes in 1797.
Volume I includes a memoir of Tobias Smollett's life, as well as 'A View of the Commencement and Progress of Romance' by John Moore. This volume ends with some of Moore's plays and poems, such as 'The Regicide: a Tragedy', 'The Reprisal', and some odes.
Volume II includes a preface and apologue, as well as 'The Adventures of Roderick Random'.
Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet and author. He is best known for novels like 'The Adventures of roderick Random' (1748) and 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle' (1751).
John Moore (1729-1802) was a Scottish physician and travel author, who wrote the novel 'Zeluco' (1789), a fictional analysis of the motives of a 'selfish profligate'.

Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. Externally, sound. Rubbing to the extremities and the spine, with the board exposed to the top corner of Vol II. Marks and wear to boards, with rubbing along the top of the front joints. Spotting to the endpapers and paste downs. Book importer's label to rear paste downs. Rear hinge is starting to Vol II while front hinge is starting to Vol I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with age-toning to pages and the odd spot, particularly to the first and last few pages.
