Complete as two volumes in one. 'The Vicar of Wakefield' was one of the most popular and widely read novels upon its publication. It's about the fall and rise of the Primrose family, who are presided over by the benevolent narrator, the Vicar. Illustrated with six plates. Written by Oliver Goldsmith, an Irish novelist who is best known for this novel, though also for his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village', and the plays 'The Good-Natur'd Man' and 'She Stoops to Conquer'. Illustrated by Thomas Stothard. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Arthur J. Munby, Inner Temple 1882'. Munby was a British poet and diarist. One leaf of publisher's adverts to the rear.
Condition
Rebound in a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Marks to the boards, with a heavier mark to the tail of the boards and spine. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with the occasional light spot. Tidemark to the plates.
