A very scarce first edition translation of the ornithological study of singing birds from French naturalist George-Louis Leclerc. Beautifully illustrated with engraved plates of the birds discussed, which include the chaffinch, wren, black bird and starling.

Illustrated with an engraved half title and title page, and with twenty-four further copper plate engravings. Collated, complete.

With the contemporary bookplate of Cheyne & Buchanan's circulating library to the front pastedown, with their stamp to the half title, and with further stamps throughout, not affecting text. Inscriptions to pastedowns and endpaper, in both pencil and ink, and with further pencil inscriptions to recto of plates.

Featuring descriptions of the habits, customs and incubation habits of the birds discussed, along with a 'history of the management of canary birds'.

Condition

In a full tree calf binding. Significant rubbing to back strip and board perimeters. Small loss to back strip head. Hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Library bookplate to front pastedown. Stamp to half title and advertisement leaf. Contemporary ink and pencil inscriptions to pastedowns and endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting throughout with further pencil inscriptions and library stamps, largely to recto of plates and not obscuring text.
