Tobias Smollett's continuation of David Hume's 'History of England'.
David Hume's history covered from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution of 1688. Smollett then continued the history, focusing his research on the eighteenth century.
Smollett's volumes range from the reign of William and Mary at the turn of the century, to the death of George II in 1760.
Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and four plates.
Volume II illustrated with four plates.
Volume IV illustrated with two plates.
Volume V illustrated with one plate.
Tobias Smollett was a Scottish poet and author. He his best known for his novels 'Roderick Random', 'Peregrine Pickle', and 'Humphry Clinker'. Smollett considered his own 'History of England' to be his greatest works, as this was the work for which he received real financial success. During the time he was writing his 'History' he served a brief prison sentence for libel.
Condition
In a full marbled calf binding, Volumes I and II rebacked. Externally, generally smart. Minor bumping to the extremities. A little light rubbing to the joints, spines, and extremities. Minor marks to the boards and spines. Head of the front joint of Volumes IV and V are cracked. Hinges of Volumes I, III, and IV starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Front joint and hinge of Volume V are strained. Rear hinge of Volume V is starting but firm. Front endpaper of Volume II is detaching. Small chip to the tail of the front endpaper and frontispiece of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with only the occasional spot.
