The twelfth edition of this very scarce eighteenth century educational guide for 'Young Gentlemen and Ladies', very scarce in all editions. 

Designed to be a 'private tutor for little masters and misses', this delightful work contains sections dedicated to the history of England, the solar system, the wonders of the world, the 'behaviours of great men' and 'directions for reading with elegance and propriety'.

Illustrated throughout with vignette woodcuts and decorations.

ESTC reference no. T83115. Majority of leaf L2 missing, with remaining portion partially restored to gutter. Leaf M restored to fore edge.

Contemporary inscriptions to front and rear blanks from the children of the Longman family, with the inscription 'Ann Longman her book gift by Ann Read January 6th 1799' to verso of title page.

First published in 1751, this popular work saw numerous editions throughout the second half of the eighteenth century.

Condition

Rebound in full cloth, with endpapers renewed. Remnants of original floral boards laid down. Contemporary inscriptions to front and rear blanks, with further inscription to verso of title page. Internally, firmly bound. Majority of leaf L2 missing, with remaining portion partially restored to gutter. Leaf M restored to fore edge. Pages lightly age toned due to paper type, with the odd spot.
