What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Leather Binding

In the original French.

First published the previous year, this 'nouvelle edition' offers a contemporary insight into the Estates General of 1789. In this work, published while he was a disciple of Rousseau, he was one of the first to identify the Third Estate as 'the nation'.

While in this work the Comte presents his early support of the French Revolution, in his later life he became an extreme counter-revolutionary, and royalist conspirator.

With the armorial bookplate of P. Francis to the front pastedown, and his inscription to the head of the title page.

A smart copy of this argument for the French Revolution.

Condition

Rebacked, in a half calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail and joints. Significant discolouration to board perimeters. Hinges strained, but firmly held. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to title page head. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot throughout.
