The very scarce second edition of this work, published ten years after the first edition.

Scottish lawyer John Swinton, Lord Swinton, provides tables of the English and Scots standards, and the customary measures used in various Scottish counties and boroughs. He discusses the reciprocal conversion of various standards, and conjectures about ancient weights and measures in Scotland, from the time of David I onwards.

Retaining the original half title, and with errata leaf to the rear.

With the illustrated bookplate of British ornithologist, conservationist, painter, naval officer, broadcaster and sportsman Peter Markham Scott to the front pastedown. Scott was the only child of Antarctic explorer Sir Robert Falcon Scott.

A very smart copy of this very scarce late eighteenth century discussion of Scottish weights and measures.

Condition

In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to joints, board perimeters and back strip, with small losses to the leather. Head of front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type, with instances of light spotting throughout.
