Leather Binding

Complete in two volumes. 'The Guardian' was a short-lived newspaper that was published from 12th March 1713 to the 1st October 1713. The newspaper was founded by Richard Steele, and had contributions from his friend and colleague Joseph Addison. Other contributors include Thomas Tickell, Alexander Pope, and Ambrose Philips. With illustrations to the title page. Richard Steele was an Irish politician and playwright. He was a member of the Kit-Kat Club, an English Whig club with strong literary and political associations. His first successful play was 'The Funeral', which was performed at Drury Lane. Joseph Addison was an essayist, politician and playwright. He also held form the Kit-Kat Club, which renewed his friendship with Richard Steele, whom he at met at Charterhouse School. His most famous work was 'Cato, a Tragedy', a successful play about Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis. Addison and Steele founded several publications during their friendship, including the daily publication 'The Spectator', which ran from 1711 to 1712.

Condition

In the original calf binding. Externally, with slight cracks to the spines. Leather to the spines is lifting. Light marks to the boards. Some rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Front board of Volume II may detach with further handling. Rear joint of Volume II is starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound due to the cracks to the spines. Pages are lightly age-toned with some scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages.
