Two volumes in one, both works are vanishingly scarce.

The first edition of both works.

Two historical works on the Dutch Republic, published during a period in which the Provinces saw a lot of war and republican revolutions. These works offer an insight into the global attitudes to the Dutch Republic during this period of upheaval and political unrest. They look into the principle causes of the revolution and the possible repercussions. 

George Ellis' work in this volume is notable for having been translated into French by the future King Louis XVIII.

'History of the internal affairs of the United Provinces, from the year 1780, to the commencement of hostilities in June 1787', published in 1787. This work is often attributed to William Godwin, the notable writer and father of Mary Shelley. This work is comprised of his contributions to the 'New Annual Register'.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, leather is rubbed. Some light marks to the boards and spine. Ink to the tail of the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Stamp to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and clean. Stamps to the title pages.
