This three volume work was intended to benefit the younger members of his family. Prior to this publication there were no natural history texts for children.

Comprising six parts bound in three. 

With nineteen plates to part I, twenty-two plates to part II, twenty-two plates to part III, nine plates to part IV, eleven plates to part V and thirty-two plates to part VI. 

115 plates total, and therefore this copy is lacking one plate, most likely to the first part. Parts II-VI are complete in accordance with their binder's instructions. 

Issued from 1786 to 1789. 

Prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown of all volumes, Jas Smith, Sydnope. Another prior owner's inscriptions have been excised to the front pastedown and title page. Blind stamp to title page of volume I, James Smith, Darley Bale Nursery. 

Occasional pencil notation to the margins. 

Without front endpaper and binding instructions to part I.

Publisher's adverts to the rear of volume VI. 

A very scarce ornithological work for children.

Condition

In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, sound. Small loss to the head and tail of spines. Hinges are slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the front pastedown of all volumes, Jas Smith, Sydnope. Another prior owner's inscriptions have been excised to the front pastedown and title page. Blind stamp to title page of volume I, James Smith, Darley Bale Nursery. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Chips to the title page of volume II and to the flamingo plate at the edges. Small loss to the fore-edge of A5, affecting the final words of A5r and A5v. Closed tears to pages 41-44 at the fore-edge. Small loss to bottom corner of fore-edge to F1 of volume III. Closed tear to fore-edge and bottom edge of G6 to volume III. Occasional light spots to pages.
