The 'revised and augmented' scarce third edition of Samuel Johnson's seminal work, in ten full tree calf volumes.

This work, the most important eighteenth century edition of the dramatic works of Shakespeare, edited by Dr. Johnson and George Steevens - and with their critical notes - was first published in 1765.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and four plates to volume I, and folding plate volume V. Collated, complete.

With the inscription of C. Meyer to front pastedowns and free endpapers of each volume.

Containing each of Shakespeare's plays, this is a wonderful late eighteenth century edition of the works of the greatest dramatist the English language has ever known.

Condition

In full tree calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Vertical splits to back strips of four volumes. Rear joints of five volumes, and front joints of volumes I and X all starting, with boards holding firm. Loss of volume number label to volume I, and partial loss to volumes III and IX, and with three renewed. Inscriptions to front free endpapers and pastedowns. Internally, eight of the ten volumes are firmly bound. Binding of volume IV nearly split between pages 288 and 289, and with volume V very tender between pages 400 and 401. Pages bright, with light spotting throughout each volume.
