Description
First Edition, Leather Binding
A three volume first edition set of French language books, detailing the impact of the American Revolution in 'the four parts of the world'. Although described as impartial and relating to the worldwide affects, the books lean somewhat towards the French army's part in the conflict, in which they sided with Washington's forces against the British, and is one of the first accounts of their role. The books appeared in several additions subsequently and makes for an interesting insight into the more patriotic French historical accounts which would soon diminish with the onset of the revolution. Contains the ink inscription of one George Buchanan, dated 1786.
Condition
In calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, the boards, back strips, joints and extremities are worn, and there is a missing spine label, as well as a partially missing one. There is also worming to the front board of the second volume. The hinges are also tender. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and are largely bright and clean, however there is foxing to endpapers, marking to title page the odd spot, handling marks and age toning throughout, although the text remains clear. Each volume contains an ink inscription to the endpapers.
