This poetical essay is addressed to Hayley's friend, George Romney. Added to the titular work is an Epistle to a Friend on the Death of John Thornton and Hayley's Ode to the prison reformer, John Howard. This is the second edition, the first appearing in 1778. A scarce Dublin imprint of this work. Rebound, in paper wraps. William Hayley was from Chichester in Sussex. He was born affluent and was determined to have a thriving literary career. He met his first success early on with his 'Ode on the Birth of the Prince of Wales' which was published in 'Cambridge Verses' before being reprinted in the 'Gentleman's Magazine'. He is best known for his moral poem 'The Triumphs of Temper'.
Condition
Housed in paper wraps. Front and rear endpapers have been lightly pasted to the external wraps, with the text block loose. Title page is loosening slightly. Otherwise, internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
