Leather Binding, Publishers' Original Binding
The eighteenth edition of this general English Dictionary launched by the lexicographer Thomas Dyche and completed by William Pardon. As well as technical words specific to disciplines such as botany, music, and surgery, the eighteenth century dictionary also includes a supplement of important proper nouns to the rear, including the names of significant towns, cities, rivers, kings and queens, poets, and philosophers. Prior owner's calligraphic ink inscription to the front pastedown, 'Thomas Hall. Anno Dond 1702'. Hall's name can also be found in black to the front board, but it is very faded.
Condition
In a full calf binding. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards with some moderate wear to the extremities. A little loss of calf to the head of the spine. The front joint and front hinge are extremely tender, and the rear joint and rear hinge are rather strained. There are some small chips to the front and rear endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are age-toned but clean throughout.
