A very scarce work.

Undated, dated from the ESTC.

ESTC citation number T72107, however ESTC states the publisher as being 'J. Dixwell, No. 148, St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross', whereas the title page for this copy states 'J. Smeeton, No. 148, St. Martin's Lane, Charing Cross'.

ESTC states that this is an extract from 'The Gentleman's Recreation', which had other volumes on fowling, hawking, and fishing. 'The Gentleman's Recreation' is known as being one of the greatest seventeenth century sporting works.

'The Huntsman' is a detailed sporting work on hunting, a explorative concise work advising on the best methods of hunting.

The author advises the reader on hunting many different types of animals, such as hare, wild rabbit, otters, and squirrels, and discusses the best dogs to use in hunting.

Written by Nicholas Coxe, who was also the author of 'The Fowler'.

Condition

Rebound in a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot. Publisher's adverts to the reverse of the title page is a little closely trimmed to the tail, affecting the final line to a couple of words only.
