The scarce first edition. Complete in two volumes. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco with marbled boards. An interesting topographical work on society and manners in France, Switzerland and Germany. With anecdotes relating to some eminent characters. Written by the Scottish physician John Moore, who spent several years travelling throughout Europe alongside the young 8th Duke of Hamilton. Moore's narrative is told throughout a series of letters. This work gives a fascinating overview of everyday society in Europe during the mid-eighteenth century, before many tumultuous decades of Revolution and War. With the previous owner's ink signature to the title pages. With a half title page in volume one. Condition

Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco. Externally, very smart with minor shelf wear. Light marks to the boards and light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise bright and clean. Light spotting towards the front and rear with the odd spot throughout. Previous owner's ink signature to the title pages. Small mark to page 47 of volume one. Small ink marks to pages 42 and 43 of volume one. Offsetting to pages 448-451 of volume one. Some offsetting to the edges of the blanks.
