Description

First Edition, Very Scarce

A very scarce work from part I of volume LXVIII of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, published in 1778.

A fascinating yet brief letter from British geologist and Conservative Member of Parliament Sir William Hamilton, addressing British physician Sir John Pringle - termed 'the father of military medicine' - on the matter of traces of the presence of volcanos on the banks of the Rhine.

Written 'on board a yacht on the Rhine' in 1777, this six page reproduction of a letter is disbound from the scientific journal of the Royal Society. Established in 1665, it was the first journal in the world exclusively devoted to science.

A very scarce insight into the attitudes of early geologists, published decades prior to the ground breaking discoveries of Charles Lyell.

Condition

Disbound. Light spotting to pages, with light tide marks to perimeters of each leaf.
