A series of seven brilliant lectures given by the President of the Royal Academy, Joshua Reynolds, dating from 1769 to 1776.
Joshua Reynolds was a celebrated eighteenth century painter, who painted in the 'Grand Style', with depended on the idealisation of the imperfect. He was also the founder and first President of the Royal Academy of Arts. Reynolds was known for specialising in portraits, painting portraits of the Navy officer Lord Keppel, and the Royal Army officer, Lord Heathfield.
Dedication is signed from Reynolds, though it was actually written by Samuel Johnson, who, alongside Burke and Malone, edited these discourses before publication.
Condition
In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Extremities and spine are a little discoloured. Light rubbing to the joints, with small cracks to the head and tail of the joints, cracks a little heavier to the front joint. . Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and clean, with scattered spots to the endpapers. Ink inscription to the title page.
