The first edition of this very scarce work on the trade of arts in England during the eighteenth century.

A comprehensive volume written by James Barry, comprising chapters on opinions on the capacity of the English for polite arts, a brief history of the arts, including the rise and perfection of the arts in Italy, the different styles taught in different schools, the introduction of fine arts in England, and much more.

ESTC reference number T92644. 

Collated. ESTC notes a final advertisement leaf, which has not been bound in this copy. 

A previous owner's inscription to the Preface page, John Savage, possibly the signature of the noted author.

Condition

In full calf binding, with the titles stamped in gilt to the spine. Externally sound with minor edge wear and slight scuffing and rubbing to the spine and the extremities. Front and rear joint is cracked with cords visible. A previous owner's inscription to the Preface page, John Savage, possibly the signature of the noted author. Internally, hinges are slightly loose to the front and rear boards, otherwise firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean.
