A collection of works on scientific and mathematical experiments. With all four volumes. Volume I contains arithmetical and mechanical experiments; volume II, experiments in optics, chromatics and acoustics; volume III, electrical and magnetical experiments; and volume IV, experiments in pneumatics, hydrology and pyrotechnics with an appendix of miscellaneous recreations. Volume I and II are first edition, volume III is a second edition and volume IV is a third edition. With twelve plates to volume I, eighteen plates to volume II, nineteen plates to volume III and thirteen plates to volume IV. Volumes I and IV are complete, with volumes II and III lacking one plate each. Plate VI to volume II has been removed. Plate I to volume III has been removed. With half-titles to volume I and II. A scarce and fascinating work on recreational science. The work explains illusions for the magician or conjurer as well as science enthusiasts. A fascinating eighteenth century text.

Condition

In mixed calf bindings. Externally, worn. Heavy rubbing to the boards and spines of all volumes. Loss to the head and tail of spines to all volumes due to rubbing as well as some losses to the boards. Both hinges and joints to volumes I and II have failed with the boards detached but present. Front hinge and joint to volume III are weak and held by one cord only. May detach with further handling. Front hinge and joint to volume IV is weak and held by one cord only. May detach with further handling. Rear hinge and joint to volume IV is tender. Rear hinge and joint to volume III is starting but firm. Volume I and II are lacking endpapers. Library stamp to the title page of volumes I and II, NR CC County Library. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper and to title page. Binding to volume I has split with the entire work in several sections. Plate VI to volume I is detached but present. Binding to volume II has also split, with the work held together at a weak point to page 127, may detach with further handling. Volumes III and IV are firmly bound. Tidemarks from water damage to the outer margins of volumes I and II, not affecting text. Pages to all volumes are age toned. Creasing to the edges of several of the plates throughout all volumes. Instances of offsetting from plates to pages, most prominent to volumes I and II. Spotting throughout all volumes, heavier to volumes I and II. Lighter spots to volume IV which is the cleanest of all volumes.
