What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

Bulstrode Whitelocke was an English lawyer, writer, parliamentarian and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of England. This was his journal of his time there, in the years 1653-1654. This first edition was later re-edited by Henry Reeve in 1885. With half-titles to both volumes. With the bookplate of M V Wachenfelt to the front pastedown to both volumes. The von Wachenfelt family were Swedish. Pater Familias Miles von Wachenfelt was a multi-talented person, who was agrarian attache at the Swedish embassies in London, Dublin and the Hague. It is believed that this bookplate reflects his engagement in the Agrarian Academy. The silver in the bookplate nods to his collection of ancient silver. Therefore, this book belonged to an individual who worked for the Swedish Embassy himself. Another prior owner's stamp to the recto of front endpaper to both volumes. With an appendix of original papers. Whitelocke was despatched to Chirstina, queen of Sweden, to conclude a treaty of alliance and to assure the freedom of the Sound. Subsequently, following this mission, Whitelocke was retroactively regarded as the first English and British Ambassador to Sweden. He successfully assisted Cromwell in negotiating the treaty with Sweden of 1656.
