Complete in two volumes.

An educational work for the young gentlemen and ladies of the Georgian Era, a detailed exploration of many different facets of science, from celestial subjects to optics. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece, four folding plates, and thirty plates to Volume I, and a frontispiece, eight folding plates, and twelve plates to Volume II.

Collated, all plates are present.

Volume I contains 'The Philosophy of the Heavens and of the Atmosphere', Volume II 'The Use of the Celestial and Terrestrial Globes; The Philosophy of Light and Colours, and the Use of All Sorts of Optical Instruments; The Philosophy of Sounds, Music, and the Organization of the Ear'.

Half-title present to Volume I.

Lacking front endpaper and half-title to Volume II.

Condition

In a rebacked calf binding. Externally, sound. Rear joint of Volume II is starting. Evidence of former loss to the head and tail of the spines prior to repairs, with small surface cracks to the spines. Some light marks and discolouration to the boards and spines. Very light bumping to the extremities. Hinges of Volume I are starting but firm, hinges of Volume II are strained, particularly the front board. Prior owner's ink to the front paste downs, offsetting to the front endpaper. Lacking front endpaper and half-title to Volume II. Prior owner's ink inscription to the rear paste down of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Stamp to the title pages, prior owner's ink to the head of the title page of Volume II. Folding plate facing page 24 in Volume I is torn in half, with the detached panel present and loosely inserted, folding plate facing page 214 in Volume I is heavily torn.
