The work of Scottish writer and journalist William Guthrie, who is now most remembered as a historian. This is considered to be his most important work, going through many editions until the mid-nineteenth century, and a French translation in 1801.

In a full calf binding. Small losses of leather to back strip head and tail. Rubbing to joints. Two horizontal cracks to the back strip. Ink inscription to front board. Hinges strained, with front board a touch tender, and rear board firmly held. Inscription to front pastedown. Front free endpaper detached, and loosely inserted. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with light handling marks throughout, and the odd spot. Major closed tear to the folding table to the rear. Small losses to the fore edge of the folding frontispiece.
