What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding, Rebound

James Hervey (1714-1758) was an English Anglican clergyman and writer, his style very much complementing nature's beauty and wonder. 'Meditations and Contemplations' was his first published work, and ran fourteen editions in fourteen years. Hervey influenced William Blake, who was an admirer and painted 'Epitome of James Hervey's Meditations among the Tombs' between 1820 and 1825. 'Meditations among the Tombs' had a lasting impact due to its sombre tone, and led to his placement among the 'Graveyard School' of poets, whom had an influence upon Horace Walpole's 'The Castle of Otranto', which in turn later influenced a generation of Gothic and Romantic writers.

This volume has been rebound with a modern spine and the original boards.

Contains an ownership inscription to the boards, to a Mrs Rofs, No 45 Broad Street, Soho Square London.

Condition

In a full speckled calf binding, rebound with a contemporary leather spine. Externally a trifle rubbed, modern spine is lovely, extremities and edges of boards worn with some loss to the leather. Ownership inscription to front pastedown and rear endpaper. Internally firmly bound, pages slightly age toned and generally clean, bar the odd spot.
