1766 Three Tracts on the Corn-Trade and Corn-Laws
What Our Customers Say...
Description
An Important Work, Early Edition, Leather Binding
These tracts were written due to the scarcity of corn in 1756-7. The high prices led to food riots in several parts of England, making it a popular topic with both newspaper and pamphlet press. Several publication placed blame on farmers, millers and bakers. Smith argued that the scarcity had been occasioned by deficient harvests in the west and north-west parts of England over the preceding years.
There was a return of corn scarcity and disorder in 1766 which called Smith to give expert testimony to parliamentary committees investigating the causes of high prices.
McCulloch refers to these tracts as 'The best of the earlier works on the corn trade' (p.68) ONDB.
This second edition is a reprint with additional material.
