A biography on the life of the North American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist Protestant theologian, Jonathan Edwards. Edwards is widely regarded as being of the America's most important and original philosophical theologians, with his theological works being rooted in Reformed theology, and in Puritan heritage. He generally grounded his life's works on the concepts of harmony, ethical fittingness, beauty, and the Enlightenment. Edwards was critical in the shaping of the First Great Awakening, giving rise to the New England school of theology. Written by Samuel Hopkins, though he isn't attributed as the author in this work. Hopkins was also an American Congregationalist theologian. The author and Edwards studied together, studying divinity in Northampton, Massachusetts. Together they, alongside Joseph Bellamy, created a theological scheme, which is often called 'Hopkinsianism', but is also referred to as New Divinity.
