The third English edition of this work, translated from the original Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. The original Spanish edition was first published in 1605 and 1615 in two parts. This edition complete in four volumes. ESTC T59494

Featuring a biographical account of the author's life by the renowned English author Tobias Smollett. 

An important novel in the Western literature, Don Quixote is regarded as the first modern novel; following the adventures of fearless noble from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who enjoys reading many chivalric romances and slowly loses his mind and wants to become a knight-errant. 

A wonderful example of an early edition of this important work, a scarce find.

Lavishly illustrated with twenty-eight copper-plates designed by Hayman and finely engraved. Collated, complete. No half title as called for.

Condition

In four uniform full calf bindings with titles in gilt to morocco spine label. Externally excellent, boards lightly rubbed. Previous ownership inscription to recto frontispiece vol. I, undated. Minor staining mark to upper edge pp.1-2 vol. II, not affecting any of the text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally very clean with odd light faint spotting to occasional leaf and a touch of age toning, as usual, with occasional offsetting to odd leaf.
