First Edition, Very Scarce

The very scarce first edition thus of this smart volume of the religious sermons of Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist and author Jonathan Swift.

Published just under two decades after Swift's death, this consists of nine brief sermons on a variety of subjects, including brotherly love, the false witness, and the 'difficulty of knowing ones self'.

During his lifetimes, Swift published two volumes of sermons, containing three sermons per volume. This work features these six sermons, alongside three hitherto unpublished examples of his religious discourse.

Retaining the original half title. ESTC reference no. N24128

With the contemporary inscription of Rob. Stirling, dated 1784, to the recto of a front endpaper.

A lovely volume of sermons from the author of 'Gulliver's Travels'.

Condition

In a full cloth binding. Fading to back strip, with bumping to back strip head and tail. Light rubbing to joints. Hinges reinforced. Inscription to recto of a front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot.
