Description
Leather Binding
Volume I and II of his Rebellion and Civil War [1829] are complete over the first four volumes of this set. Volume V is the first part of the third volume of Rebellion. Volume VI of this set, and part II of the third volume of his Rebellion is missing. Volumes VII, VIII and IX are all three parts to Edward Hyde's Life [1761]. No collation available, aside from missing volume appears complete. The History of the Rebellion was the first full scale detailed history of the Civil War, made even more influential by the fact Hyde was a key player in the events during the War. He wrote these works between 1646 and 1648. He was banished and during this time completed his autobiographical Life. In 1671 he revised his History and incorporated his Life into it. History was first published as a part of the publishing war between the Roundheads and Cavaliers. Edward Hyde was the 1st Earl of Clarendon. He was loyal to the King and built the Royalist cause. After 1660 he served as chief minister. He was also the maternal grandfather of two monarchs, Queen Mary II and Queen Anne. The proceeds from the sales of his History and Life were instrumental in building the Clarendon Building at Oxford University.
