A fascinating work on astronomy by Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle, known for his accessible treatment of scientific subjects during the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment. A popular early scientific work on cosmic pluralism. This was one of the first major works of the Age of Enlightenment, initially published in French in 1686, here translated by William Gardiner.

Added to this is English essayist Joseph Addison's defence of mathematician, astronomer and theologian Isaac Newton.

With a contemporary owner's inscription to the front free endpaper.

Condition

In the original full calf binding. Bumping to extremities. Loss of leather to joint of front board. Front and rear boards held by cords only, may detach without careful handling. Loss of leather to spine head and tail. Rear pastedown detached but present. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean.
