This volume contains:
Richard Paul Jodrell's 'The Female Patriot' being a first edition. The half-title has been discarded. ESTC reference T98506. Institutionally this work is found at three locations in the U.K. Jodrell was a classical scholar and playwright, although his name is not to the title page this work has been attributed to him.
John Sargent's 'The Mine: A Dramatic Poem' is a first edition. ESTC reference no T2392. This copy retains the half-title.
Sophia Lee's 'A Hermit's Tale: Recorded by his own Hand' is a second edition and has been bound without the half-title. ESTC reference no: T85992. There are four copies of this work held institutionally worldwide. Lee's first Foray into writing was a play titled 'The Chapter of Accidents' which was influenced by Diderot's comedy 'Le Pere de Famille'. 'A Hermit's Tale' is a ballad in 156 stanzas which proved to be quite popular.
Hannah More's 'Florio' with 'The Bas Bleu' is a second edition. The half-title to this has been discarded. ESTC reference no T35623. Six copies of this work are held institutionally in the U.K. It was these poems that mark Hannah More's transition into serious views translated through her writing.
Thomas Denton's 'Immortality' is a first edition, and retains the half-title. ESTC reference number T37010. There are seven copies held institutionally of this work.
A charming selection of scarce poems from the eighteenth century.
Condition
In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, worn. Lacking the backstrip. Rubbing to the boards. Front board is detached but present. Title page to first work is detached but present. Internally, binding is loosening in places. The cords between quires M and N of Florio are split. Title page to 'Florio' has been laid down. Pages are generally bright. Chip to the top and bottom of page 68 and 69 to 'The Bas Bleu' and to the top of pages 69 - end at the top of the gutter. Occasional scattered spots.
