Description

An Important Work, Early Edition, Scarce

'The Compleat Housewife' contained the first published recipe for 'katchup'  and is believed to be the earliest source for bread and butter pudding. 

Illustrated, with a frontispiece and six plates.  The first folding plate is lacking half, and the 'First Course' plate has half provided in facsimile. 

Collated, two of the plates are compromised but otherwise the text is complete. 

ESTC reference no: T31011. 

Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper, and to the front blank. 

With receipes for food, wine, cordials, medicines and salves. 

Condition

In a full contemporary calf binding. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the head of spine. Joints are split, with the front hinge strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper and to the front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Small closed tear to page 325. Loss to two of the plates and to the bottom corner of the frontispiece. Just the odd spot.
