Complete in three volumes. In Latin. A very scarce work. This work is a quarto, the signatures running as [a4], b-k4, l2, A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Zzz4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, Aaaaa-Ggggg4, *4, a4, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Zzz4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, Aaaaa-Ooooo4, *4, **2 a-z4, aa-rr4, A-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Yyy4, Zzz3. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. Some of the works consist of parallel Greek text and Latin translation. Volume I has a half-title, and another half-title on the leaf of h4 recto. Printed in double columns, with each column having its own pagination. Volume I published in 1753, Volume II published in 1756, Volume III published in 1757. A collection of the works of Pope Leo I, also known as Saint Leo the Great. Containing his sermons, letters, the works delving into many aspects of theology. Almost one hundred sermons, and one-hundred and fifty letters of Pope Leo have been preserved. Pope Leo was a Bishop of Rome from 440 to 461, and he is generally considered to be one of the most important figure in the Church's history. He was the first pope to have been called 'the Great', and was a Roman aristocrat. For theology he is best remembered for issuing the Tome of Leo, the major foundation to the debates of the Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon. His chief aim was to sustain the unity of the church. Condition

In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, sound. Lacking the backstrips. Minor marking and rubbing to the boards. A little bumping to the extremities. Front board of Volume I may detach with further handling. Rear joint of Volume I is starting but firm. Front board of Volume II is detached but present, with the front endpaper to page xi is detached but present. Hinges of Volume III are starting but firm. Bookplates to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Page xiv/xv of Volume II may detach with further handling.
