Description

Fine Binding, First Edition, Leather Binding, Rebound, Scarce

With a subscriber's list to the start of volume I. This work is a collection of Hill's essays, letters and poems. His 'Dramatic Works' were published later in 1760. ESTC no. T107059. With the bookplate of Thomas Chilcott, the organist of Bath in 1757 to all volumes. Chilcot was an English organist and composer. Aaron Hill was an English dramatist who was a perfectionist when it came to his writings. Some believed that his polished nature lead to a lack in spontaneity with his dramatic works. He famously had some controversy with Alexander Pope after he wrote several satiric lines on him. This then meant that Hill was referenced in Pope's 'Dunciad' which fuelled the controversy. Hill managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane when he was 24 years old. Whilst doing so he staged the premier of George Frideric Handel's 'Rinaldo'. This was the first Italian opera designed for a London audience. These personal letters of Hill's further convey his love and interest in theatre. They provide a contemporary view of late seventeenth and early eighteenth theatre.
