The third edition. Complete in two volumes. Uniformly bound in full calf with gilt detail. With an engraved frontispiece and twenty-four full-page plates in volume one. Collated complete. A critical work arguing for Christian belief and biblical studies over contemporary philosophical and scientific thought. With sections on Greek philosophers, Sir Isaac Newton, the physics of Moses, and ancient Egypt. Translated by J. B. De Freval. This work was originally written in French by Noël-Antoine Pluche. Pluche was a French priest who wrote several books, notably. 'Spectacle de la Nature', regarding natural history. Each volume has a bookplate for Henry and Gwen Melchett to the front paste-down. Henry Mond, 2nd Baron Melchett, was a British politician, industrialist and financier. He served as an MP for the Liberal party, and then later changed to the Conservative Party, and was an avid champion for Zionism. He was married to Amy Gwen Wilson, who usually went by the name Gwen. With the previous owner's ink inscription to the title pages of both volumes, dated 1817. A-M24

Condition

Uniformly bound in full calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards. Spine is darkened. Bookplates to the front paste-downs. Offsetting to the edges and spotting of the paste-downs and free endpapers. Hinges strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but generally bright and clear. A few scattered spots and handling marks throughout. A repaired closed tear to page 17 of volume one. Worming throughout volume one, heavier towards the rear of the book. Previous owner's ink inscription to the title pages.
