Description

Leather Binding

A lovely example of the works of Alexander Pope. In a contemporary calf binding to the time of publishing, with volume I rebacked with the boards preserved. Complete in 9 volumes. The works of the renowned poet, Alexander Pope. Pope was a extremely influential poet of the 18th century, with his most famous works including, 'The Rape of the Lock', 'An Essay on Man', as well as his translation of Homer's 'The Odyssey'. With the ink inscription of J. Houghton to the front end paper of each volume. Notably there is a slip tipped-into the front pastedown of volume I. It reads 'To George de Horne Vaizey, in memory of Mrs. Wood who died at the Hampton Hall. 28. March 1880. From F. E. Schulhof and M. F. Vaizey'. This appears to be the husband of the notes author Jessie Bell who wrote under the name Mrs George de Horne Vaizey.

Condition

In a uniform full calf binding, volume I rebacked. Externally generally smart. Heavy rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, to the raised bands and extremities. Rubbing to the extremities, with patches of rubbing to the front and rear boards. Cracks to the front and rear joints of each volume, apart from volume I. Three volumes are lacking the original spine label, with partial loss to the spine labels of two volumes. The front and rear hinges of each volume are strained, with the rear board of volume 8 partially detached held by cords. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places. The title page of volume III is detached but present, and heavily creased. Volume V has the previous owners pencil annotations to the front and rear endpapers.
