These plates include illustrations of the use of pulleys, levers, convex and concave lenses for spectacles, the reflection of light, and the solar system and eclipses.

The author was a friend of Newton, and introduced Newtonian philosophy into Leiden, where he was a professor of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy at the University. He is credited for propagating Newton's ideas in continental Europe.
